Help! I Think My Skin’s PH Is Out Of Balance!

I found this question on my social media and chose to answer it here.

Question: My skin has been really dry this winter; will I have to deal with dryness in the spring too?

Answer: Oftentimes, our skincare needs change when the seasons change.  To keep up with the changing conditions, you may need to adjust your pH levels.

What’s My PH Level?

When I say pH levels, I’m talking about the acid verses alkaline balance in your skin. A pH level above 7 is alkaline and a pH level below 7 is acidic. A pH level right at about 7 is considered neutral. Of course, too much of anything is not good for you, therefore too acidic or too alkaline is not good for you.

There are a lot of factors that can affect your skin’s pH level, here are a few:

  1. Humidity (change of seasons)

  2. Air pollution

  3. Overexposure of sun

  4. Soap and detergents

  5. Cosmetics

  6. Sweat

  7. Tap water

Try A Low Alkaline Cleanser

One of the ways you can balance your pH level with your skincare routine is by using a low alkaline cleanser. You’ll want to select a cleanser with a pH level between 2.5 and 4.3.

Below are some cleanser suggestions based on your skin type:

  1. Normal skin – find a mild cleanser.

  2. Oily skin – find a cleanser that contains Salicylic Acid.

  3. Dry skin – find a cleanser that contains a moisturizer or find a cream based cleanser that includes Lactic Acid

  4. Combination skin – look for a mild cleanser that contains Glycolic Acid.

  5. Myelinated skin – find a cleanser containing Hybrid Glycolic Acid.

  6. Sensitive skin – look for a cream-based cleanser so it moisturizes your skin but does not contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids
