Pitta Dosha: Let Meditation Reduce Your Stress

As you may know, Ayurveda is the world’s oldest health science and is the sister science to yoga. If you have heard of yoga or practiced yoga, you have experienced Ayurveda. Yoga is for spiritual purposes; Ayurveda is for balancing the mind and body.

In Ayurveda, there are three types of energies that surround us and the term “Dosha” is used to describe the energies. Those who practice Ayurveda, believe that energy is a requirement in our bodies to help the body function more smoothly. Everyone has all three, but one is usually dominant primary, and secondary and then there’s usually one that’s least dominant. The three Doshas are:

Vata – Energy of movement that enables fluids and nutrients get to our cells

Pitta – Energy of digestion allows us to metabolize the nutrients in our cells

Kapha – Energy of lubrication – it maintains the structure of the cells in our bodies.

In Ayurveda, disease is the result of too much deficiency of your primary Dosha. Mind, body, and consciousness work together to cultivate balance and in our bodies. Today we’re reviewing Pitta Dosha.

PITTA DOSHA

Pitta Dosha is comprised of fire and water. In the body it governs all heat, it controls digestion, metabolism and transformation. It also regulates our sensory perceptions and how we distinguish between what’s right and what's wrong.

Your Pitta energy may be out of balance if you answer yes to more than one of these questions:

  • Do you tend to be demanding or critical?

  • Are you often irritable and impatient?

  • Do you feel discomfort in hot weather?

  • Do you have excess stomach acid?

  • Do you wake up in the early hours and find it difficult to fall asleep again?

  • Are you a perfectionist?

TO BALANCE PITTA

  • Try to remain cool; avoid hot temperatures and food.

  • Prefer cool, heavy, dry foods and those with sweet, bitter and astringent tastes.

  • Reduce pungent, sour, salty tastes and warm, oily and light foods.

  • Refrain from overworking

PITTA & MEDITATION

Those whose primary Dosha is Pitta, tend to think meditation is a waste of time; they could be doing something more productive during those moments. Ironically, Pittas may be the ones who need meditation most. However Pittas, often need to be educated on the health benefits of meditation for them to become open to the practice. For example, it is clinically proven that meditation may help reduce stress, reduce hypertension, improve a body’s total well-being and have anti-aging benefits.

Pittas often overthink, so it’s harder for them to focus. However, using a candle flame to focus your attention may help your during meditation. To try this, place a white candle somewhere you can see it easily from a comfortable sitting position. Then, gently gaze at the flame while you focus on your breathing and watch yourself become more relaxed.

Pittas also tend to be prone to anxiety and worry, so reciting positive mantras may prove to be beneficial. Here are some examples of mantras:

  • All is well in my life

  • I am calm and relaxed

  • This too shall pass

  • I refrain from going in my mind where my body is not.
